Accident – what now? A checklist for the first few minutes

After an accident you're shaken. This checklist helps you not to forget anything important – from securing the scene to the accident report.

An accident happens in seconds, and afterwards hardly anyone is completely calm. That's normal. So that nothing important gets lost, we've summarised the key steps – to read now and to look up if it ever happens.

1. Secure the scene

Switch on the hazard lights, put on your hi-vis vest before getting out, and set up the warning triangle at a sufficient distance. On motorways and expressways: get behind the crash barrier.

2. Help and call for help

If anyone is injured, give first aid and call the ambulance (144) or the European emergency number (112) immediately. If people are injured, the police (133) must also be notified.

3. Exchange details

If there is only damage to property, exchange names, addresses, number plates and insurance details with the other party. The easiest way is the European Accident Statement, available from any insurer – ideally keep one in the glovebox. If an exchange of details isn't possible, for example because the other party isn't there, the accident must be reported to the police without undue delay.

4. Document everything

  • Photos of both cars, the damage and the scene – from several angles
  • Number plates, street names, time
  • Names and phone numbers of witnesses

5. Don't sign anything hastily

Fill in the accident report factually and only sign what you saw yourself. You don't need to admit fault at the scene.

6. Report it – and call us

Report the damage to your insurer. And give us a call: we'll look at the car, tell you what happens next and coordinate with the insurance company.

This checklist is general guidance and does not replace legal advice.
